You know, for just toning up you don’t need a ton of cardio, I would say at least 30 minutes, daily. You need a balance and I think I’ve found the best results in my weight lifting when my body is nice and warm. So, I would suggest 30 min. minimum of cardio then at least 30 minutes of weights. A few days a week I will go 45 minutes to an hour of running or stairs or cycling, then do 30 minutes of weights.

You would do the weight training first and then the cardio. While it is okay to warmup with some light cardio before your weight training session, you generally don’t want to do cardio first because weight training relies on the ATP/CP and Lactic Acid (Anaerobic) Systems primarily for energy (not Glycolysis, which is used when doing endurance work).

Doing cardio first will deplete you of these energy sources (because any exercise — even cardio — uses ATP/CP and Lactic Acid systems FIRST — when doing cardio, eventually you will rely on Glycolysis) and make it difficult to work as efficiently when lifting weights (which relies almost entirely on these systems.

In other words, you won’t be as strong if you do cardio first.

Having said this, keep in mind that you really can’t build muscle and burn fat at the same time. Those activities require different strategies (to build muscle, you need to consume more calories or burn less; to burn fat, you need to burn more calories or consume less). You CAN tone but that won’t involve building too much muscle.

Not that it is not possible at all to build muscle and burn fat. If you’re just starting out, it is very possible. However, if you’ve been training a while and have built some muscle already, it may prove difficult (for the reasons I’ve already given). My advice as a trainer — focus on one or the other. If you just want to tone, I assume you mean you’re uninterested in building muscle — you just want to work on shaping the muscles, not making them bigger. Fine — that you can do :)

My recommendation — warm up with some very light cardio, then hit the weights. Warm up for each exercise with a lighter weight (all warmups should be a dress rehearsal for the actual exercise).

    Good luck!

5 mins cardio for warm up. Heavy 6 to 10 rep weights concentrating on major compound movements (squats, bench press, deadlifts, chin ups, shoulder press, dips). Then do 30 minutes cardio and finally stretching to finish off.

Either routines would work for you just as long as you make sure you warm up your muscles before you do strength training. The key in toning up is to burn away the fat that hides muscle and additionally increase muscle mass so that the muscle is more apparent.
If you want to burn more fat, do your cardio in intervals (ie: 2 mins walk, 5 mins jog, 3 mins sprinting etc and then up the intervals). If you want to build more muscle then up the weights. Challenge your muscles so that you feel fatigued. If, for instance, you can do 10lbs weights 10 reps 5 times without feeling tired then 10lbs isn’t enough for you, opt for 12 or 15lbs.
