OK, I’m going to try to be as detailed as possible so you guys can get the best grasp on what I’m trying to go for. Currently I’m 210 lbs, and 5’10 I use to weigh 240lbs back when I was 15 (I’m 19 now) but I have dieted a couple times and now I’m 210lbs I’m on a diet again and I’m going to reach 180lbs. Now when I reach 180lbs I plan on changing up my diet, instead of losing weight I’m going to focus on lifting weights and gaining muscle. I want to go back up to 200 or around there with the muscle I build, now the thing is I try to research advice on building muscle like that but I’m always referred to bodybuilding websites where it’s a bunch of body builders pretty much aiming for something that I’m not aiming for. I want to be big but a lean big, So huge biceps is a no no, huge shoulder muscles or basically any big muscles, I don’t want to be veiny either. Only muscles I picture rather large on my body would be pecs, and traps (even at that I don’t want them too big). Now are there any websites you guys can refer me to for what I’m looking for? I didn’t go by what I’ve read because I don’t want to be taking in the wrong nutrition and doing the wrong exercises. I got the whole losing weight part on lock but I haven’t done any muscle building yet so I have NO CLUE were to start with that and thought I might as well start researching what I need to do now.

Just to be a little more detailed lol

Thank you for taking the time to help, I appreciate it. I will vote best answer

One thing that’s important to say is that the two pics that are No Good are of obvious steroid users pumped full of drugs. The Good pics are possibly all natural. I think that’s the main difference between what you want and don’t want. If I were you, I’d check out natural bodybuilding sites since their training routines will be abbreviated compared to the steroid guys.

I’m pretty good at building muscle from following the Starting Strength routine, but it seems like you’d be more into the natural bodybuilding side of things. One idea would be to follow a linear progression and doing Starting Strength until you get through the novice stage and after that cutting any excess fat you gained and then focusing on an intermediate routine with lots of sarcoplasmic hypertrophy, especially for your chest. The book Practical Programming for Strength Training is your friend here and it’ll lay out how to do a solid routine and how to progress from novice to intermediate to advanced. Although it’s for mainly strength building, it’ll give you an excellent foundation so you can understand how to progress your bodybuilding goals.

for those of you with 2+ years of weightlifting/bodybuilding type training? how many days per week gave you the best results? 3 vs 4 vs 5 days a week training? i don’t take steroids, and don’t intend to, I’m trying to design a workout , but i’ve been doing 5 day workouts often past couple years like mon-fri, legs, chest, back, shoulders, and arms, with your experience just let me know if 4 day or 3 day worked better? thanks for the info , ps. i’m trying to build lean muscle mass, and i do know everything about the diet and supplements and using free weights and mostly compound exercises like squats, bench presses, and deadlifts, so if you can jsut tell me what day bracket worked best for you and anything else thanks!

The main issue is working specific muscles each day. Our body actually isn’t designed to do that. Full body every other day workouts I’ve found are best for free weights.

If you want to pack on lean mass very quickly, I wouldn’t suggest free weights. Body weight calisthenics, despite what bodybuilding magazines tell you are best for strength, mass, AND endurance. You just have to know how to use them. I used to lift for 3 years until I discovered for myself that the best exercise equipment is what we were born with.

Think you can’t gain better strength? Ever met a lifter who could do one-armed pull-ups? Push-ups? One-legged squats? Hold on to exposed rafters in a garage from the BOTTOM and pull themselves up?

I used to do bodybuilding exercises for 3+ years, but I stopped after my shoulder got injured ( I had tear in the rotator cuff muscles) it was a really bad experience.

I don’t actually know why I got this injury, I used to warm up every time, and I used to lift my moderate weights, I used to do the known exercises. But all of a sudden, I found my right shoulder very sore, i went to doctor he said it’s tear in the rotator cuff. He asked about the reason, i told him I don’t know myself. So why does injuries happen during bodybuilding exercises, even though you warm up and do the correct exercises?

Bonus question: now, 4 year later, I feel my shoulder is much better, but I lost weight and became much less than before. Do you think I should go back to gym? or should I practice another sport just to avoid worsening my shoulder injury?

Peace, the answer to your question is that one stresses a joint or a muscle more than it is prepared to handle. Thus the injury and no matter how much one warms up it can still happen. You see this is professional sports all of the time. An athlete is playing and injures his arm or leg when they are fully warmed up and in the best of condition. Stresses to areas are common but if you load the area more than it can handle at that time you become injured. As for the shoulder you may or may not have had a rotator cuff injury and without having an MRI there is no positive way to know for sure. If your shoulder is feeling good again certainly go back to the gym but lift this way. When it comes to the shoulder do movements with dumbbells. The reason for this is that the weight or stress factor is very specific and it cannot be transferred from one side to the other. The other thing to do when doing these movements is to always start the movements by working the uninjured side first. So you would do 3 sets of increasing resistance of 10 to 12 reps with a minute rest between sets. Upon completion of the uninjured side do the injured side. Lift only what you are comfortable with and don’t attempt to keep the weights equal. With time the injured side will gain in strength and catch up.

Hello, I’ve just recently stopped running and now want to move on to "Bodybuilding" I found this 3 day workout routine, which I think is quite good

Day One:
Chest, Back, abdominal and cardio.

Day Two:
Rest.

Day Three:
Shoulders, legs, abdominal and cardio.

Day Four:
Rest.

Day Five:
Biceps, triceps, abdominal and cardio.

Day Six and Seven:
Rest.

3 sets of each exercise going from 15-12-12.
Abdominal = sits ups + leg raises. 6 sets roughly 15 – 20 reps each set.
Cardio, Jump rope.

I was just wandering how to determine the weights on the dumbbells/ barbell/ pec dec and bench I should be using. I cannot afford the gym, and found the "home" gym a more reasonable option.

Once again, on the internet it said, "Each set should consist of 8 to 15 repetitions to allow your muscles to work adequately. It isn’t worth lifting heavy weights at low repetitions because a 3-day workout routine isn’t designed for those who want to build up strength and mass. This routine is targeted at those who want to maintain their current physique and want to lose a little weight.

This is MY largest worry, I found this workout most convieniant but I need a workout that will build muscle, I was wondering how to develop this workout and manipulate it. I just need help on how to change and determine the amount of weight I should be using for the biceps etc..

Thank you very much if you can help me, it is MASSIVELY appriciated.

Well, if you want to build size, do the bigger exercises.

Squats, dead lifts, pullups, and bent Rows for upper back.

PS:lifting heavier will help you gain strength, but you can do both lift heavy and light enough for 12-15 reps and gain size both ways.
It depends on how much you eat (make sure it’s healthy) to help build size (mostly protein food)

I am currently 16 and am a fairly big guy who works out daily. Infact, I will be doing my first bodybuilding competition this fall. As a bodybuilder who aspires to turn pro someday( I do have the genetics for it) I would like to knowif there are any techniques to enhance the rate at which my clavicles grow. I am not asking for someone to give me exercises to enalrge my delts such as overhead presses, what I am looking for is something to increase the base I have at which I have to build on. Are there tricks to increase my shoulder girdle anymore than it already will during puberty. I want to have massive shoulders someday, any suggestions?

I can’t answer this question, but I want to reply so that I may tell you how impressed I am with your writing skills (grammar, punctuation, word choice). Are you sure you are only 16 years old? You have a wondeful grasp of the English language at such a young age. Forget bodybuilding – become a writer.

……
im just about to go to sleep, and thought id let out some of the stuff that is on my mind at the moment…. its pretty depressing but yeah, you can hate on it all you want, whatever.

im really tired of life aye… for many reasons….

im 20 years old at the moment, and have been sick since i was 17….. what type of sickness? i have no idea and neither do the doctors… i have researched my symptoms and tried numerous "ways" to get better but with no prevail…. everyday is hard….. i know millions of people out there have it alot harder than i do, but i still feel like the weight of the world is on my shoulders. i used to be so fit, into surfing and was planning on competing in bodybuilding comeptitions. im not sure if anybody reading this has ever physically seen years of hard work slowly fade away and had their dreams lost…. but let me tell you it is the worst feeling i have ever experience in my life… i gave up much of my teenage years and dedicated my days and nights to training hard and sleeping early, and to see 4 years of sacrifice slip through the gaps in your fingers like sand is so horrible, i would not wish it upon my worst enemies aye…..

every night i pray to god asking him "if he has a purpose in my life and that one day i will not be sick, then let me wake the next day, if not, to take me to heaven and not spend another day on this earth feeling like this" its deep i know, but im just venting aye…..

why am i feeling so low? at the moment i cant do anything active…. i can barely hold down my casual job at the video store…. i have no idea how i will be able to work full time, let alone have a family…. im so blessed to have a beautiful girlfriend but i have no idea why she puts up with me… my hands and feet are constantly ice cold which makes me hestiate when shaking peoples hands. even during and after exercise they are ice cold, doctors have no idea why. i cant go surfing (ive tried so many times) because my hands and feet go numb and i cant feel them at all. it takes over an hour in the shower to try and get the feeling back into them. ever heard of somebody getting frostbite from surfing in warm water? no, cos its rediculous.. but is very possible for me… when i do exercise (weights, cardio etc) my body doesnt sweat ate all (even during high exertion) or even warm up and the next day my muscles become so deeply sore that it hurts to move them, on top of being bed ridden for two days after with strong body fatigue… i am a full qualified personal trainer and cant even use that because "how can i teach someone to be healthy when i cant even do it myself"…… the reason alot of my problems are fitness related is because fitness is a big part of my life, and my body is almost alergic to it now…. try thinking of the one thing in your life that you are passionate about and love deeply, then not being able to interact with it or do it….. you will never fully understand what i feel…..

I think i know y u feel tired most of the time like sort of depressed anmd for the reason y ur cold all the time. First off u r only 20 u still are young so dont give up. Next u could be enimic which is when ur body lacks iron. try doing th is. take vitamins like "one a day" vitamns or regular vitamins that hav a lot of iron it it. Before taking vitamins ask ur doctor first. Then jus take one day or three days out of ur week and jus sleep. if u cant sleep then go to ur doctor and ask him if itsokay if u take tylenol extra strenth. that will make u slepp in two minutes. but dont forget to ask ur doctor first so nothin bad happens to u. the reason y u feel sick all the tim is because of years of training tha put stress on ur young body in ur teen years. and now ur feeling the efffets from it. If ur not sweating during hi exertion excerice then u probabley dont have any sweat glands. Did you used to sweat when u were younger? If not then u might not hav and sweat glands. U should stop doing exercise and tryin to ligft weights and wait a couple of years so ur body can rest and repair itself after a ll those years of lifting weights. acupunture is also a good way to relive strees and sickness!! u should jus take a day and so to a spa and gett and massage or go in a hot tub to circulize the blood in ur body. oh and the reason y ur hands r always cold r because ur blood is thin. the thicker ur blood the more it could heat ur body. since ur blood is thin. the blood cant heat ur body and acts like its just liquid going through ur body. Try eatin more potatoes and food high in ironn and take vitamins with iron in them every day. I know u feel sick and like no on can help u but please try my advice and if it still doesnt work you should go get ur blood tested for any complications.
